Its flowers grow up to twelve centimeters in size and attract attention in colors such as red, orange, yellow, purple, pink or white. The French painter Paul Gauguin helped the hibiscus with its famous post-impressionist South Sea paintings in the 19th century to its still existing image as a tropical flower in the hair of a beautiful dancer. Originally, the hibiscus comes from Southeast Asia, but its several hundred species also grow in other tropical and subtropical areas of the world - and now increasingly in the pot on Germany's terraces.
