Every five years, the members of the European Parliament (MEP) are elected. They represent the citizens of the EU countries and are directly elected by them. We tell you everything you need to know about the important 2019 election.
European Election 2019: When is elected, where and who is allowed to vote?
The ninth European elections will take place between 23 and 26 May for all EU countries. In Germany, the election is on Sunday, May 26, 2019 from 8 to 18 clock. With us all citizens are entitled to vote from the age of 18 years . In addition, eligible voters must have resided in Germany for at least three months. The election takes place in public institutions such as schools. Each constituency has its own polling station. Which applies to you, you find on the front of the
Election notification . You should already have this in the mailbox, since it will be sent out about four to six weeks before the election. If you did not get it, you can make a choice without dialing it - but only if you're in the electoral roll. Inquire about this with your church. In any case, you should take your ID card or passport with you to vote.
How does the absentee ballot work?
You are not home on May 26? Then apply for the absentee ballot: On the back of the election notice you will find a form for the postal vote, which you must fill out by May 26th. Alternatively, you can apply for absentee voting online at the community of your main residence. If you want to apply for a postal ballot for someone else, that works too. For this you need a power of attorney.
EU election: How many votes does each voter have and who is elected in Germany?
In total, 96 MEPs are elected in Germany. Each eligible voter has in the European elections - in contrast to the general election - only one vote, with a party or other political association can be selected.
Which parties are admitted to the 2019 European elections?
In Germany, 41 parties are admitted to the European elections, of which 39 are nationwide. In addition comes the CSU in Bavaria. On the ballot papers are therefore nationwide 40 election proposals. Allowed are these parties:

- SPD - Katarina Barley, Udo Bullmann
- FDP - Nicola Beer

EU regulations and guidelines determine many areas of our lives . Some examples:

The number of MEPs depends on the size of the country, which is why we have 96 seats and most of the EU countries have more influence . For example, Estonia is so small that it has only six MPs.
