It will be introduced a kind of tourist tax for the Balearic Islands

The Germans love the Balearic Islands, especially the island of Mallorca. But the holiday in the "17th Land" will soon be more expensive: a new tax for tourists is introduced.

In Spain, regional elections were held on 24 May and the newly elected government today announced a new decision:

The three elected parties, the Socialists (PSOE), the new Left Party Podemos (in English: "We Can") and the Left Ecological Alliance Mér per Mallorca ("More for Mallorca") have today decided on a new tax for holidaymakers in the Balearic Islands,

You can imagine the tax similar, as well as here in Germany on some islands usual tax or bed tax .

Whether you are staying at a hotel on your next Mallorca-, Menorca-, Ibiza-, or Formentera (not Cabrera) stay, at the campsite, apartment or private with friends, you must pay a tax. Even if you travel to the Balearic Islands as a tourist on a cruise ship.

The planned tourist tax is due to be introduced at the end of 2016 and will amount to up to two euros per person per day. This was announced by the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands today.

The tax is levied for environmental reasons: the landscape is to be protected and the islands attracted to the tourists. The population therefore welcomes this tax.

The hoteliers are however against the tax. Already between May 2002 and October 2003 there was an ecological tax for vacationers in the Balearic Islands (except on Cabrera): one euro per day. At that time, the number of visitors of the Germans decreased. But if that really was due to this tax ...
