Just now he impressed in his ZDF program "Markus Lanz" with his interview: He spoke empathetically with the two former handball players, the twins Uli and Michael Roth (47), about their cancer on the prostate. A taboo topic, but Markus Lanz (40) created an atmosphere of openness in which any embarrassment was out of place.

Understandable, if you know that the popular moderator himself was affected by a cancer drama in the family. Only a few days ago he said on the talk show "Kölner Treff" (WDR): "It was difficult. My father was no longer there. "Behind these simple words is a tragedy: When Markus Lanz was 14 years old, his beloved father died of leukemia. A stroke of fate that changed his life.

In the days and weeks after the death of his father, when he needed the love of his mother Anna (75) the most, he had to go back to the Bressanone boarding school Vinzentinum, where he lived from the age of eleven.

How a child feels, who has lost the beloved father, everyone can sympathize. But how is it, if you can not escape into the comforting arms of the mother, but in an old walls, in whose long, dark corridors you feel very small and lonely? "The thick walls know many stories of little boys and their longing for the home, " says Lanz.

The relationship between Markus Lanz and his mother was not easy. He says, "I have fought very bad fights with my mother." Of course, the mother had a hard time with her father's cancer death.

"It was not easy financially either. We had a huge pile of debt, "recalls the native South Tyrolean. These worries drove Markus Lanz into work early on: "Nothing comes from nothing - the most important insight that I owe to my mother." Today he respects his mother very much, is grateful for her life's wisdom. Their wisdom could be the source of his success.

But this success is, as Markus Lanz admits, still overshadowed by melancholy: "My father was a very warm-hearted person. The further I go in life, the more I miss him. "

And now you understand why he regularly checks with the doctor. And why he repeatedly emphasizes in interviews how important to him is the relationship with his little son Laurin (8) from his relationship with RTL presenter Birgit Schrowange (51). "I try not only to be a weekend dad, but also to be present in everyday life, " says Markus Lanz.
