household Tips

Which household knits really do what they promise? Housekeeper and cleaning expert Lieschen Frohne (59) finally clears us up ...

Laundry must dry indoors in winter

That's not true. You can dry your clothes outside at any time of the year. If there is cold, frost and dry air outside, drying clothes outdoors is no problem . The water in the laundry freezes immediately, it is rock hard. The water then passes from the frozen state of matter immediately in the gaseous and evaporates, so to speak. Scientists call this sublimation. This works best when there is still some wind blowing. The result is dry laundry even at freezing temperatures.

Newspaper lets the windows flash

Right. In my cleaning classes, I always say: "With Babette from page three you get all the stripes free." But I have a much simpler household typing: With the cloths of Belvando (www.belvando.com), cleaning the windows much easier and faster. Not even a cleaning agent needs it. Moisten the microfibre cloth with hot water, wring out, clean the window and wipe with the glass cloth. It's so easy that even men enjoy cleaning!

White wine against red wine stains

Right. White wine neutralizes the acid in the red wine. Better and cheaper, however, works with salt . As a general rule: absorb liquid as quickly as possible with a paper towel . Always work from the edges to the center of the stain. Do not rub! That only enlarges the stain! And then off to the laundry. If possible wash at 40-60 degrees. Further stain tips: removing blood stains: How to get rid of every stain!

Simply iron away wax stains

Not quite true. You can get the wax away with the iron, but you need to treat the stain even further. This is how it works: Put a household on the wax stain, briefly iron it over . That dissolves the wax. My household tips with colored wax: rub the stain with turpentine, which dissolves the color. Then rinse with the fat (see left) and into the washing machine.

Vinegar softens the laundry

Whether that's true, there are different opinions. I like to use a dash of vinegar essence as a natural softener. But surely the laundry will be softer with a chemical agent. The disadvantage: towels z. B. no longer absorb moisture so well. Therefore I prefer to do without and take vinegar from time to time.

Detergent helps against grease stains

Right. Drizzle on the grease stain, leave to soak for a short time and then rinse with clear water . This works well especially for sensitive clothing, because the detergent does not attack them (eg silk or similar). Otherwise, saliva also helps very well. Its enzymes defuse stains.

Only at 60 degrees is laundry clean

That's not true. Bacteria are killed at 40 degrees. But: To prevent germs from accumulating in the machine, it is important to wash hotter now and then . Therefore: kitchen textiles, such as dishcloths and dishcloths, on which bacteria and other food germs can frolic, should therefore always be washed separately at 60 degrees.
