The full moon had not been that big for decades

The moon had not been so big and bright for 30 years! You should enter this date in the calendar.

"We have a 'super moon' every 14 months ..." Yeah, but we had such a super-moon like this last in 1982 and we will not have it until 2033 next time.

On the night of 27th to 28th of September we see the moon as big and full as it has been in a long time.

You think this message somehow familiar? Yes, last year, August 10, 2014, we have had a super moon that has been bigger than it has been for 20 years. Now, on September 28, 2015, the Earth's Moon will be 20 kilometers closer than the year before.

What is a super moon?

A "supermond" is when the moon is closer to Earth than 367, 607 kilometers. The fact that the Moon is so close to the Earth makes it appear particularly large (about 14 percent larger than usual) and bright (about 30 percent brighter). This happens more often, because the moon does not circle our earth in a circle, but in an ellipse. However, we usually have a "supermond" when the moon is just crescent-shaped or even new moon. Then it is difficult to see with the naked eye that the moon is just bigger than usual.

We experience a SuperVOLLmond about every 14 months. Then we not only see the super moon in full splendor, now its proximity to the earth shows special effects. He is bright and especially tall. However, we see this change most likely when the moon is near the horizon: only when houses or trees are in the field of view as a relation does the size change appear so massive.

At the same time is a lunar eclipse

In Central Europe, in the early morning hours of September 28th, a total lunar eclipse can still be seen at the same time: At 3.07 o'clock the huge full moon enters the core shadow of our earth. From 4:11 to 5:24, he is completely in the shade: the darkness is total.

The moon then shines in red light. He is a so-called "blood moon". Due to the refraction of light in the Earth's atmosphere, some rays of light still reach the Moon despite the total darkness. Especially the red parts of the refracted light reach the surface of the satellite.

There are conspiracy theorists who claim that a blood moon is a bad sign. Specifically, this blood moon is said to be a sign of the approaching apocalypse, as it is the fourth blood moon within two years, so the end of a "tetrad" - but that's probably more of a superstition.

What does the supermond have consequences for us?

A great sight! Not more.

As the lunar orbit around our earth is ellipsoidal, the moon, as mentioned above, is often close to our earth. And otherwise we do not notice it, right?

Yes, this time the Moon is especially close to Earth, but that's not enough to do anything with us.
