Chris Pine about family and friendship

JOY: "Zeit zu leben", your current film, is based on a true story: The director of the drama, Alex Kurtzman, had no good relationship with his father and did not meet his sister until he was 30. Based on this you will learn in the film only after the death of your father that you have a sister. How do you understand yourself privately with your parents?

Chris Pine: I'm very lucky with my family! We used to go cycling, playing baseball and spending great summer holidays together. My father and mother were always there for me! Precisely because I love their love so much, I can well imagine how angry my film character must be because he was denied this care. When I was shooting "Time to Live, " I've been thinking a lot about relationships and friendships in general. Everybody knows the feeling of being disappointed by a human being and of having to decide whether to accept this person with their quirks or part with them.

Do you discuss such problem with your parents?

Yes, with my mother! She is a psychotherapist, a very smart woman, she understands me incredibly well. It always gives me courage when I am too self-critical in the job.

In 2009 you celebrated your breakthrough with "Star Trek". After that you did not hear anything from you for a while. What did you do during this time?

Lots! I traveled a lot and bought a house in L. A., which I also set up. I took French and Spanish lessons, watched a lot of movies, played the guitar. This break was good for me - even if it was not perfect for my career (laughs).

What is your next project?

Right now, I'm shooting the thriller "Jack Ryan" with Keira Knightley. In May 2013, the sequel to "Star Trek" will be released to the cinema and hopefully I'll play theater again soon. The stage is my big love. As a kid, I originally wanted to be a pilot. When I realized that this was going to be nothing, I was totally fixated on theater and after studying English I took part in a special training program at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. If all goes well, I'll soon be on Broadway with Scarlett Johansson in Tennessee Williams' "The Cat on the Hot Tin Roof." A first for me!

Then you work with two of Hollywood's most sought after actresses. Did you ever have two women in parallel, like your movie father in "Zeit zu leben"?

A dangerous question (laughs). I have to admit, that actually happened. But these times are over.

What makes a happy relationship for you?

My parents are married 41 years and 45 years together. Such a love is spectacular and enviable. The parents of all my friends I grew up with are divorced. A working relationship depends on many factors that need to be right. The most important is the time you get to know each other. Because both have to be open to a new love.

What qualities do you appreciate about a woman?

I grew up only with strong women: my mother and my sister always knew what they wanted - that impressed me. Besides, I like women who can listen and show genuine interest in what I tell. These qualities paired with spontaneity, a sympathetic laugh, humor and self confidence then probably make my dream woman (laughs). Overall, it is important to me that through my partner I find fulfillment and can be the best version of myself.

You are currently working on model Dominique Piek. Do you surprise your girlfriend with a romantic gesture?

In my eyes, romance often turns into kitsch. I like a cozy dinner, but it does not necessarily burn a dozen candles or rose leaves scattered on the table. When I love a woman, I do not want to think about what I can impress her with, but just do not want to pretend. To be authentic, I find much more impressive than a sunset walk by the sea or a dedicated violinist.

In Hollywood, a veritable engagement boom has recently broken out. When do you want to apply to your girlfriend?

I'm not in a hurry with the wedding. Until I say "yes", a little bit of time will pass - I guess ten years (laughs)!
