Three films, three main prizes

Since the beginning of the Oscars in 1929, only three films have won in all five main categories. These films are "It Happened One Night" of 1934, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" of 1975 and "The Silence of the Lambs" of 1991. The main categories are Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay,

The trophy

The Oscar is 35cm high, 4kg heavy and its material value is about 250 euros, since it is made of a gold-plated copper-tin alloy. During the Second World War, the interior of the Oscars was due to lack of material from plaster. The figure represents a knight who stands on a roll of film and is leaning on a heavy. The film reel features five spokes symbolizing the five areas of the film industry: actors, directors, writers, technicians and producers. The trophy was designed by Cedric Gibbons, who was then Art Director of MGM Studios. Since 1983, the figure is manufactured in the RS Owen Company in Chicago, the production takes about 40 hours.

The name "Oscar"

For the name of the "golden boy" there are many theories. The most popular is: Academy Librarian Magaret Herrick is said to have the trophy similar to her uncle Oscar. In other theories, Bette Davis or Walt Disney are namesake of the Oscars. Until 1939, the Oscar was known only under its real name "Academy Award of Merit".
