The Golden Camera as an annual prize gala on ZDF should be abolished. On March 21, 2020, the 55th ceremony will be the "last TV show for the time being, " the Funke media group said. It should be moderated by Thomas Gottschalk.

The television and film award has been in existence since 1966. The award was founded by the television magazine "Hörzu", which until 2014 belonged to the publishing house Axel Springer. The rights were transferred with the sale of "Hörzu" by Springer ("Image", "World") to Funke ("WAZ"). Since 1994, the prize gala has been shown on ZDF every year.

The ratings have recently fallen sharply . In 2010, there were more than 5 million viewers, only 2.4 million this year.

Viewers' viewing habits have changed over the decades, according to Jochen Beckmann, CEO of Funke Magazines. It's time to explore new options for the Golden Camera brand . "With the YouTube Golden Camera Digital Award, we already have a format that is geared towards the advancing digitization in media usage."

The gala suffered an image damage when ProSieben entertainers Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf managed to bring a double by Ryan Gosling to the stage of the live show in 2017.

Eight years ago, the sports presenter Monica Lierhaus was surprisingly back in front of TV cameras after two years fighting against her serious illness. Thirteen years ago, the showmaster Rudi Carrell, who was marked by his severe illness, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. It was his last TV appearance.

This year, the gala from Berlin caused a stir, because the climate activist Greta Thunberg many celebrities read the Levites.

The prize is a small replica of the first functional electronic television camera in the world, the so-called Farnsworth, which was used in 1936 at the Olympic Games in Berlin.
